This session will provide information about & glimpses of the practice of formative assessment in middle school. The Formative Assessment in Middle School (FAMS) Project Director from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) & the Project Coordinator from the Ohio Resource Center (ORC) will also demonstrate a variety of web-based platforms - including the FAMS Blog, FAMS E-portfolio & ilearnOhio - that support teachers seeking to meet the learning needs of diverse students in their classrooms.


Nancy Brannon

Early Childhood Specialist, Ohio Resource Center
Nancy Brannon received her undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University and a master’s of arts while living in Louisville, KY. Nancy taught for Columbus Public Schools for many years and directed a private childcare for children ages birth to 12 years. She is now a Resource Specialist and program coordinator for the Formative Assessment in Middle School project at the Ohio Resource Center.

Karen Daugherty

Program Coordinator, Formative Assessment, Ohio Department of Education
Karen Daugherty has served as an educator with the Toledo Public Schools and has been a visiting professor in Mathematics education with the University of Toledo. She is Mathematics consultant in Curriculum and Instruction at the Ohio Department of Education where she presently serves as the Formative Assessment in Middle School (FAMS) program coordinator as part of Race to the Top Federal Grant.
